A good friend once told me that it was hard to envisage an experience quite like driving an Audi R8 through the winding bends and forest lined roads of Northern Ireland. That was in back in 2007 and, at the time, a machine like the R8 was a fairly new venture for the renowned manufacturer of ‘the peoples car’, but after their Le Mans racer began to clean up year after year, the R8 was thrown into production as part of the hugely important Quattro range and quickly became a rival for Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche. Now that first generation is coming to an end.

Introducing the LMX, the last of the R8. Designed as a final farewell to the Le Mans superstar, £160,000 seems a fair price since they’re only making 99 of them. For that you’ll get a 5.2-litre naturally aspired V10, giving you 562bhp that will get you from 0-62 in 3.8 seconds and has a max speed of 198mph. It also comes with carbon ceramic brakes and…lasers. That’s right, the same laser headlights they first stuck on their racers a few years ago although Audi do say their intelligent camera system prevents you from flashing the lasers at oncoming cars by simply turning them off. Unfortunately though, the Audi R8 LMX is completely sold out so the only way to get one is to buy second hand, but why let something as trivial as that stop you.
